Bird of Paradise lands at Wheeler Field on Ohahu, Hawaii.

June 29, 1927

Flown by South Boston native Lt. Albert Hegenberger and Lester Maitland, the Fokker C-2-3 had taken off a day earlier from Oakland, California. The plane completes the first trans-Pacific aircraft flight in history. Hegenberger subsequently makes the first solo trans-Pacific flight using only instruments. His 1919 wedding on Castle Island is reputed to be the only one ever performed at the site.
